Freedom in a Foreign Country, (or lack thereof)…

The ability to protect yourself as an American citizen is the epitome of what it looks like to live in a country where you are free. Free to dance, free to sing, free to defend, free to work, and free to worship… I could argue the free nature of such liberties as they actually come at a price higher than you could afford to pay; the lives of the American soldier. The American soldiers’ sacrifice and what our forefathers did are completely different subjects in their own right. Nonetheless, we are granted civil liberties that we can now call our rights. Well, if I may, I urge you appreciate them because you are among the few in the world that have “rights”. Specifically speaking, the right to defend yourself is one that Americans take for granted and most of the rest of the world could only dream of having. Oppressive, greedy and money-hungry governments all over the world have made sure their citizens have no ability to protect and defend themselves. This comes in handy when they feel like controlling the lives of those who live in “their country”. However, not only does it hinder you from protecting yourself against a tyrannical government but it does not allow you to defend yourself against other citizens in that country whose motives are to take what they can and give nothing back.

I currently live in one of those countries which permit its citizens to own guns, though highly regulated. However, I happen to be a foreigner so I am exempt from such a right. Coming to Italy was hard; I had to leave so many things back in America, including my guns and my right to protect myself. It is a weird feeling to walk the streets and know someone could try to kidnap me and I don’t have a way to fight back when my life is in danger. Sure I can have a knife and a kubaton and no one would know, but those weapons are no match for a 250 lb. man who decides I am his next victim.  You must fight force with equal force and the only equal force in this case is some firepower. No one here even locks their house doors, partly because it is too much of a hassle to turn a key 5 times to the right to lock a front door at night but partly because here in Northern Italy they all feel safe. There really isn’t any “violent” crime in my region, but that isn’t to say it doesn’t exist; after all there are immigrants, tourists, poor people and American’s just the same. And the sex trade is very alive in this country, just like it is in many other places throughout Europe. Living in a relatively “safe” region of Italy can easily take your awareness level completely away, because it seems as if most Italians are more concerned with their siesta (three hour lunch) and riding their bike to the daily markets than being violent criminals. However, I must remember that there isn’t just Italians here and there are good and bad in everyone throughout all cultures.

Either way, please don’t take your right to bear arms for granted. You are offered something many are not…freedom via those firearms. It is the second amendment that protects all the other freedoms you are given. America really is a country like none other and our guns really are a vital part of daily life in a world that has gotten so corrupt by the greed of man.

Teach your daughters that it’s OK to be a girl in a guys world.

Being a firearms instructor I often ask my female students WHY are you here.  It seems that I hear this response quite often. “Cause my dad/husband wouldn’t teach me”.  When I hear this, it always makes me a little irritated.  In fact, that very thing happened to me when I told my husband back in 2001 I wanted to learn how to shoot a gun.  I find that even in the twenty first century there are roles that society wants to clearly define as for a “man” or a “woman”.

When I was a single mother raising three sons on my own I knew that I wanted them to grow up to be independent men, men who did not need a woman to take care of them.  My sons learned from an early age to do there own laundry, cook and clean.  Yes, they even cleaned the toilets!  I was tough on them and they did not always like it or agree.  I think if you asked them today they would tell you that being raised by a strong mother was a good thing.

When I became a mother to a daughter I knew early on that again I needed to raise a child that could take care of herself and be independent, even in a guys world.  My daughter was always picked on (in a good way) by her older brothers, this built character in her.  Johana is very strong willed and not easily swayed, another fine quality to have in today’s world.

Johana is a jiu jitsu fighter, there are not a lot of 14 year old girls who compete in this sport.  Having to fight a guy in a tournament is most often the case for her.  A few months ago I watched my daughter fight her way to gold against a boy on the mat.  When you watch the guys, they usually size her up and look at her like “I can take you, your a girl” as her mom, I know that she fights harder to prove something to them but more importantly to herself.

Last year Johana showed an interest in hunting, why should this surprise me.  I believe the two people who had the biggest influence on her were my husband Tim (aka: her dad) and our daughter in law Kristy.  You see Kristy (the middle child in an all girl family)was raised by her dad to get out in the field, hunt and put food in the freezer, she passed this mindset on to my daughter.  Krsity is a great role model in showing that women can shoot, hunt, fish and do it well all while maintaining that feminine quality.  Yesterday my daughter Johana took her first animal, a mule deer!  It was a day in her life she will NEVER forget.

I write this in hopes that it will inspire you to encourage all the little gals in your life to get out there and compete in those things that are still typically guy sports.  Whether fighting in martial arts, shooting, fishing or hunting, today’s gals are a force to be reckoned with.  Gone are the days where we have to stay home and be told “no” simply because we are girls.

The 10th Anniversary of September 11th

The lead story this morning on the Today Show was the credible threat of another attack in Washington DC and/or New York City possibly this weekend.  As I watched the story it took me back to the exact moment 10 years ago when we were attacked.  I remember watching the Today Show as the towers fell, a day I will never forget.  A day our country will never forget.

As we go about our daily lives not only this weekend but in the coming days, months and years let’s not forget that we are hated by many around the world simply because we are Americans.  As sad as it is we are also hated by some of our fellow American citizens.  There are a great many people out there ready, able and willing to recreate such a tragedy.

I wish I had the answer to the “now what do we do” question.  We cannot live a life full of fear and paranoia but what we can do is live our life with a heightened sense of our surroundings each and every day.  Situational awareness is key; it could save your life.  Don’t live in the white zone (unaware), at minimum, step it up to yellow (aware).

If you see something, say something.  Safety is a choice, do your part.

I am posting a few links so you can read some of the national news stories if you wish.

How prepared are you really?

Last weekend while working the Reno gun show I happened to be near a big first aid display.   They had at least 10 to 12 tables full of stuff to choose from, from ready made kits to individual items.  Assembling a first aid kit for my car has been on my mind for over a year now.  It wasn’t until the gun show that I decided to finally do something about.

After thinking on in overnight I decided to go with a pre-packaged military trama kit and then add some additional items to it.  I truly believe my $75.00 dollar investment was worth every dollar spent and then some.

Do you have a first aid kit? If not, why not?  I came across some helpful information that may help you in your decision.  I am encouraging you to please do your part and have a small kit available to you in the event of a medical emergency.  You owe it to yourself and your loved ones, SAFETY IS A CHOICE.

A first aid kit is a collection of supplies and equipment for use in giving first aid.

Almost everyone will need to use a first aid kit at some time. Take the time to prepare a kit to have available for home and travel. First aid kits may be basic or comprehensive. What you need depends on your medical training and your distance from professional medical help.

First aid kits can be assembled in almost any type of container, and this will depend on whether they are commercially produced or assembled by an individual. Standard kits often come in durable plastic boxes, fabric pouches or in wall mounted cabinets. The type of container will vary depending on purpose, and they range in size from wallet sized through to large rucksacks.

Kits should also be checked regularly and restocked if any items are damaged or expired out of date.

First aid treats the ABCs as the foundation of good treatment.   Airway, Breathing and Circulation.

Trauma injuries
Trauma injuries, such as bleeding, bone fractures or burns, are usually the main focus of most first aid kits, with items such as bandages and dressings being found in the vast majority of all kits.

Improvised uses
Besides its regular use in first aid, many first-aid items can also have improvised uses in a survival situation. For example, alcohol pads and petroleum jelly-based ointments can be used as a fire-starting aid in an emergency, and the latter can even be used as an improvised lubricant for certain mechanical devices, and adhesive tapes and bandages can be used for repairs. These alternate uses can be an important consideration when picking items for a kit that may be used in wilderness or survival situations.

Where to keep your first aid kit:
The best place to keep your first aid kit is in the kitchen. Most family activities take place here. The bathroom has too much humidity, which shortens the shelf life of items.

The travel kit is for true trips away from home. Keep it in a suitcase or backpack or dry bag, depending on the activity.

A first aid kit for everyday use in the car should be just like the home first aid kit. For that matter, you could keep similar kits in your boat (inside a waterproof bag), travel trailer, mobile home, camper, cabin, vacation home, and wherever you spend time.

A well-stocked first-aid kit can help you respond effectively to common injuries and emergencies. Keep at least one first-aid kit in your home and one in your car. Store your kits in easy-to-retrieve locations that are out of the reach of young children.

Give your kit a checkup
Check your first-aid kits regularly, at least every three months, to be sure the flashlight batteries work and to replace supplies that have expired.

iCarry2 my first aid kit…

Until next time, be safe and always be prepared.

89 kidnapped infants rescued in China

Read the entire story CLICK HERE

The headline reads:  89 kidnapped infants rescued in China
These precious 89 children are the lucky ones, what about the others that we never know about….

I don’t get it, I will NEVER get it.  Stories like this make my blood boil.  What can I do, what can we do?  I ask myself this question often.  We can start by helping to keep this story and others like it circulating.  Raising awareness is where it begins folks.  This is not a local 5:00pm news story, should it be?

I think we have become numb to global issues that don’t affect us personally.  I will continue to post stories and photos in an attempt to raise awareness.

The quote below reminds me that I am only one women, but still I can do something!

I am only one, but still I am one.
I cannot do everything, but still I can do something;
And because I cannot do everything
I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.

The Key To Freedom Is The Ability To Defend Yourself…..

Switzerland has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. Why???

Because their government REQUIRES their men to train with and own a firearm as part of their militia standards. Perhaps the United States of America should take note…Our freedoms will surely increase; because if you are an educated individual you know ALL freedoms rest on our 2nd Amendment Rights.

The government should be controlled by the people, not the people by the government.

My fellow Americans, take note…Switzerland you are awesome!

Reasonable Doubt?

Was justice served today?  Please share your comments below.

Here is what the legal-dictionary says:

A standard of proof that must be surpassed to convict an accused in a criminal proceeding.

Reasonable doubt is a standard of proof used in criminal trials. When a criminal defendant is prosecuted, the prosecutor must prove the defendant’s guilt Beyond a Reasonable Doubt. If the jury—or the judge in a bench trial—has a reasonable doubt as to the defendant’s guilt, the jury or judge should pronounce the defendant not guilty. Conversely, if the jurors or judge have no doubt as to the defendant’s guilt, or if their only doubts are unreasonable doubts, then the prosecutor has proven the defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt and the defendant should be pronounced guilty.

Reasonable doubt is the highest standard of proof used in court. In civil litigation the standard of proof is either proof by a preponderance of the evidence or proof by clear and convincing evidence. These are lower burdens of proof. A preponderance of the evidence simply means that one side has more evidence in its favor than the other, even by the smallest degree. Clear and convincing evidence is evidence that establishes a high probability that the fact sought to be proved is true. The main reason that the high proof standard of reasonable doubt is used in criminal trials is that criminal trials can result in the deprivation of a defendant’s liberty or in the defendant’s death, outcomes far more severe than occur in civil trials where money damages are the common remedy.

Reasonable doubt is required in criminal proceedings under the due process clause of the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. In IN RE WINSHIP, 397 U.S. 358, 90 S. Ct. 1068, 25 L. Ed. 2d 368 (1970), the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the highest standard of proof is grounded on “a fundamental value determination of our society that it is far worse to convict an innocent man than to let a guilty man go free.”

WE are NOT FOR SALE, YOU are NOT FOR SALE

Slavery still exists…yep might as well face the cold hard facts now, it’s still very real. And not only does it exist but it is surely more rampant than it has ever been. Want to know just how wide-spread slavery is? Check out the following link: http://thecnnfreedomproject.blogs.cnn.com/2011/03/04/modern-day-slavery-a-problem-that-cant-be-ignored/

I had NO idea, just like you or the next person…that slavery and human trafficking was such a huge epidemic….yes epidemic, like polio…..

That is until I went to a concert in Glendale, Arizona. A few Christian bands were touring the US to help spread the word of the Not For Sale Campaign, a group of modern day abolitionists who rescue people out of the shackles of slavery. It was then that my eyes were open to the tragic world of the millions of women, children and even men who are forced into slave labor and sexual exploitation. Not just in other countries, not just in sweatshops in Cambodia but on the streets of your town…working in the restaurants you frequent, standing on the street corner or posting sexual endeavors on craigslist in your vicinity. Those people have pimps, owners, masters or whatever you want to call them that choose what they can do and when they can do it. These enslaved people are fearful that they will be killed if they even attempt to make their own decisions, let alone want to have a normal job, a family or go to school. Promised a better education and free life, they sign their future away (or their kid’s future) for a couple dollars, usually enough money to feed their families for a short amount of time, all the while never knowing the true reality that they or their family members will face.

My heart hurts for these enslaved and abused people; I won’t rest until I get this message to as many people as I possible can….. I may not be able to go to Cambodia, Thailand, Western Europe, Chicago, LA, Las Vegas or Miami to rescue these women, men and children myself. But what I can do is get the message out there, hoping you will pass it along. Awareness is the first step, giving is the second; either way both will change the world…

Check out our website http://icarry2.com/icarry2_partners.html for more information on the Not For Sale campaign, how we support their cause and how you can as well.
